Taiwan’s KMT backs away from China

Taiwan’s main opposition party has watered down its commitment towards unification with China in a cautious attempt to adjust to the island’s political realities ahead of the presidential elections early next year.
Sunday’s move by Kuomintang party members at a congress in Taoyuan, highlights the limited room for manoeuvre for politicians viewed as more friendly towards China than the Taiwanese government.

America's China-loving diplomats are deeply disturbed by Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian's decision to hold a referendum on whether the island should seek membership in the United Nations under the name Taiwan. The referendum would be held alongside Taiwan's presidential election scheduled for March of next year.
